More than Just a Love Hormone: 5 Aspects of Your Health That Are Affected by Oxytocin

The positive effects of oxytocin are well known. Studies and experiments have been conducted in various works of social life and results have shown how oxytocin can have a positive influence on a person’s life. In games, for instance, people who are administered oxytocin show signs of cooperation as they are able to trust their fellow players more as opposed to those without oxytocin. Studies have also revealed that oxytocin can enhance generosity, altruism, among other behaviors which are good for one’s social life. However, these positive effects derived from oxytocin do not tell the entire story. Oxytocin has been linked to other negative effects which include the following:

  1.   Approach-related emotions

In addition to the positive roles played by oxytocin, it’s important to know that the function of oxytocin is a bit different. Instead of supporting all the social emotions, scientists and psychologist believe that oxytocin plays a significant role in enhancing or promoting the approach-related emotions.  The approach-related emotions imply the inner feelings of an individual which have to do with wanting or yearning for something. According to the Oxford Dictionary, for instance, envy is defined as wishing oneself on the same level as another, with the possession of a desirable object or in any other aspect such as happiness. Envy, therefore, is an approach-related emotion since it entails wanting what somebody else has. Gloating is also based on approach. People who gloat are usually happy – an approach-related emotion – about other’s misfortune or about having more than what others have.

  1.   Cardiovascular

Oxytocin has also been linked to cardiovascular side effects which include effects such as premature ventricular contractions, hypertension, sinus tachycardia, neonatal bradycardia, among other cardiac arrhythmias.

  1.   Loss of Appetite

Medically known as anorexia or the eating disorder, the loss of appetite is caused by numerous conditions and illnesses. Some of the conditions resulting in the loss of appetite are temporary and reversible such as the loss of appetite resulting from the use of medications. However, some of these conditions can be severe such as the loss of appetite resulting from cancer. It is advisable that any persisting loss of appetite is evaluated and analyzed by a medical professional.

  1.   Nervous System

Oxytocin can also have an impact on your nervous system. The side effects of the nervous system include mania-like seizures and disturbances. Brain damage or permanent CNS and neonatal seizures as a result of oxytocin have been reported.

  1.   Symptoms of Overdose

The overdose of oxytocin also presents a number of effects on an individual. Some of the most common symptoms of overdose include shakiness, restlessness, slow response, sleepiness, unconsciousness, slurred speech, among others.

Final Word

There are some side effects of oxytocin which may manifest but don’t require medical attention. Some of these effects may subside or go away when treatment is offered. Also, your physician may tell you about the different ways you can reduce or prevent some of these effects. Consult your healthcare professional if you feel that oxytocin is taking a toll on you so they can intervene appropriately.
